Joe & Nick Memorial Weekend!!
As we started this weekend’s festivities in honor of the two great entrepreneurs that had a vision. Their vision was to provide family fun entertainment and with racing in their blood, they knew what they had to do. Sycamore Speedway was born (then called Bob-Jo Speedway). After the passing of Joe and Nick Fabrizius the family decided to create a night in honor of them. The first Joe & Nick Memorial race was held in 2004. Since 2004 the race has become the primo race to win. Drivers strive for success year after year to win the trophy and receive that family photo. Every year the number of laps increases by 1, to reflect the number of years Sycamore Speedway has been providing quality family fun racing. We have never had a repetitive winner and recently decided to add a small payout bonus for any repeat winner.
Friday night not only was Friday the 13th. but a full moon as well. Joe Fabrizius used to say, “when theres a full moon the drivers are wild.” Quoted by Joe’s daughter and track owner Linda Gerace. Luckily, we are happy to disprove Joe this time around. The racing was door to door and action packed throughout the entire night. In the Spectator class the 29 car of Mike Brancecum took victory again, a name we have seen on the leaderboard and will continue to see. The Powder Puff Feature went to the 43c of Stacy Doris for her first win of the season. Another name in victory lane we haven’t seen yet is Lloyd Kozak in the 18c Compact Combat class. The Modified Compacts really turned up the heat, with the Provenzano brothers running lap after lap, neck to neck, and rubbing all the way around the track in both the Heat and Feature. After fighting the family rivalry Allen in the K1 car took the heat while John won the Feature.
Wrapping up the night, we once again had a couple close calls in the One on One Drags! We raced a full size car Figure 8 and a compact Figure 8, both had great crashes and bangs throughout the course. Hit after hit, the Demolition Derby starring 4 cars was a another great crowd pleaser.
With a few hiccups to the start of the night, Saturday turned out to be a great night for racing. Full fields of cars in all classes; Super Later Model, Late Model, Spectator, Powder Puff, Compact Combat, 4-Bar Late Models, and the IRS Midgets filled the pits ready to turn some laps. Feature time came with 51 laps the distance for the 2014 Joe & Nick Memorial. Jeff Kerley in the #13 gathered the bragging rights as his name is recorded down as the winner. With only a few cautions and laps counting down the race was awesome to watch. The well known LM10 of Jordan Jackowiak won the Late model Feature. The 4-bar Late Model feature went to the M27 of Mike Provenzano. The one who swept the night: Fast Time, Heat winner, and Feature winner. After the races talking to Mike he had some good things to say and announced, “the track was good tonight, I’ve been to a couple other tracks with crap surfaces.”
On behalf of Sycamore Speedway and the Fabrizius families, we would like to thank all drivers and fans for another great weekend of racing. The drivers put on great racing for the fans and for the honor of Joe and Nick.
